It’s confirmed, PUBG will run at 60fps on Xbox One X, “not sure” about Xbox One


PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, one of the most hyped games of 2017 will land on the Xbox Game Preview program on December 12, and this should likely please many shooter fans out there. Not only will the Xbox One version be a console launch exclusive, but it will also be enhanced for the Xbox One X right from the start, which is great news for owners of the new console.

In the latest issue of gamesTM magazine, Director Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene shared new details about the upcoming Xbox One release (via Wccftech). Developer Bluehole is targeting 60FPS on both consoles, but Greene is still not sure if the team will be able to achieve this on the standard Xbox One. He explained:

Definitely on Xbox One X, 60FPS. On Xbox One, we’re not sure. We may have to limit it at 30FPS, maybe, but the last time I saw it, it was running at about 30 to 40. We’re still constantly improving it so, you know, the aim is to get to 60. That’s why we’re doing Game Preview, because I think the great thing about console is it’s a locked hardware system, so we can do really specific tweaks that tune it for those systems.

I have great faith that we’ll get there. The great thing about Battlegrounds is that it’s not…unlike the more high paced shooters, frame rate isn’t that important. Yes, it is important, but it’s not as important for us as it is in a twitch shooter. So we’re aiming for 60; not sure if we’ll get there, but that is our aim.

It’s reassuring to hear Greene say that he wants to PUBG to run at 60FPS on both consoles. Indeed, it would be really unprecedented if in a competitive game like this, Xbox One X gamers had a clear advantage (smoother framerates) over players on the standard Xbox One. What is perfectly normal in the PC world isn’t acceptable on consoles, where all players should enjoy the same gameplay experience.

60 FPS has been the gold standard for console shooters for some time, and many Xbox One games such as Halo 5: Guardians or Titanfall 2 use dynamic resolution scaling to achieve this. With its large open areas, PUBG is quite different from these two games, but it’s safe to say that most gamers would prefer to sacrifice texture quality for smoother framerates.
